DOGFIGHT INFORMATION (Updated: May 2015) ====================================== Because we have a bunch of new players participating in our weekly Dogfight, I thought I’d send out a brief explanation and description of the Saturday morning Dogfight at Tega Cay. The Dogfight is a (nearly) weekly competition for individual golfers. Our weekly competition is governed by the Rules of Golf, so we play the ball “down” (most of the time); no “Mulligans”; no “gimmees” – THE BALL MUST BE HOLED (exception: gimmees allowed for double-bogey or greater). IF there is a “Local Rule” established for any Dogfight, it will be advertised on the morning of that Dogfight. Pace of Play ========== We try to insure that each group finishes within 4 ½ hours (this helps us with the Pro Shop, which is important since we frequently ask them to “squeeze” out an additional Dogfight group). Dogfight Competition ================= The Dogfight is a Modified Stableford competition, with points awarded on each hole based on the player’s performance on that hole (relative to par). Each player is assigned a “Quota” of points required for that round. The order of finish in the Dogfight is determined by the value of the difference between each player’s points to that player’s Quota. Dogfight Scoring uses the following values: Double-Bogey/worse = 0 Bogey=1 Par=2 Birdie=3 Eagle=4 Dbl-Eagle=5 Skins Competition =============== We have two Skins games each week: Net & Gross. For both Skins pools, the rule is: two tie - all tie. So, to win a Skin, a player must have the single lowest score on that hole, and that score must be birdie or better. Your USGA handicap index is used to determine your course handicap; your course handicap is used for the Net Skins competition. NOTE: There may be players in the Net Skins competition who do not have a USGA handicap index; for those players, a “dogfight handicap” will be assigned after they have established a “quota” for the Dogfight points game. Tee Times / Number of Player Slots Available =================================== Tee Times are Saturday mornings, usually between 9:00am and 10:00am, although whenever we can, we’ll move to earlier tee times (i.e., 8:00am). We normally have either eight or nine tee times (32 or 36 players) on “most” Saturday mornings. There are Saturdays when there will be NO Dogfight. If you don’t see an email announcing an upcoming Dogfight by Tuesday AM of any week, you should make your own tee time. I’ll usually send out the Pairings/Teetimes on Thursdays; it will list each of the players in each of the groups and the assigned tee time for each group. - Standby Group: Whenever we get more players signed up than we can accommodate in the “reserved” tee times we have, we create a “Standby Group”. The Standby Group is NOT guaranteed a tee time, but with the help of the Pro Shop, we usually are able to get those players out. Sign-Up ======= An announcement email message will be sent on either Sunday or Monday preceding a Saturday Dogfight. To request a spot in the field, just respond to the email message advising you’d like to play (the message will advise you to click on an “I’m IN” hyperlink which should create a short email message that you’ll then send). Wagering ======== No wagering is required. You can sign up for the Dogfight, but not enter the wagering competition. If you wish to make a wager, there are two betting pools: Dogfight Points Game & Skins (Net & Gross). Entry in each pool is $10; so, you can wager nothing, $10 or $20. The Skins wagering pool is divided into two pools: Net and Gross. There is a large “Dogfight” cigar box that will be in the Pro Shop when you check in; next to the cigar box are some envelopes. If you wish to enter one or both wagering pool(s), write your name and which pool(s) you wish to enter on the envelope, place your entry money in the envelope and deposit the envelope in the cigar box through the slot in the top. Scorecards & Scoring ================= Scorecards must be deposited in the Dogfight cigar box after completion of your Dogfight round. Insure that after you finish your round, someone in your group deposits the scorecard in the cigar box. The Dogfight is scored during the following week, and the Results are distributed via email by Thursday evening (it may be done earlier). Additionally, the Dogfight Results are posted online at: www.number1tee.com/products.html. Quota ====== Each player in the Dogfight is assigned a Quota of points that player is expected to accumulate during the round. The first time a player participates in the Dogfight, that player’s Quota will be calculated by subtracting the player’s course handicap from 36 (so, a 20 handicap has a 16 Quota). For subsequent rounds, that player’s Quota will be the average the last five or fewer point totals earned during Dogfight rounds. Tees ==== Red Tees: Ladies White Tees: Men (course handicap + age = 84 or less) Gold Tees: Men (course handicap + age = 85 or more; age = 70 or more) Dogfight Sessions =========================== Throughout a Calendar Year, we have two Dogfight Sessions: Summer Session (May 1 thru October 31); Winter Session (November 1 thru April 30). Order of Merit & Most Skins Pools (for each Session) ========================================= At the end of each Dogfight Session, we award two prizes for exceptional play during the recently completed Session. The Order of Merit (OM) is a cash prize awarded to the three players with the highest point totals earned throughout the most recent Dogfight “session”. We calculate the winners based on the sum of the 12 best point totals earned over the session. The Most Skins is a cash prize awarded to the three players that accumulate the most Skins won during all rounds in the most recent Dogfight “session”. The OM & Most Skins award pools are funded by withholding 8%-9% from each week’s betting pools. - OM points are awarded to each competitor based on that player’s order of finish in the Dogfight, as follows: 1st place gets 100 pts; 2nd place gets 90 pts; 3rd place gets 80 pts, and so on through 9th place gets 20 pts. Players finishing in 10th or higher place are awarded 10 pts for participation, as long as they enter a wager in either betting pool (Dogfight Points or Skins). Players who do not make a wager earn no OM points for that round. - During the year, there are times when a Dogfight is scheduled on the same day as an Interclub match. We will award Order of Merit points for those players participating in the Interclub match. If you play in the Interclub and win your individual match, you get 30 OM points; if you halve your match, you get 20 points; if you lose your match, you get 10 points.
